Preventive Measures to Avoid Leptospirosis During Raining Season

Leptospirosis is one of the most common life threatening diseases that ensue especially during the rainy seasons. Leptospirosis is a disease caused by Leptospira bacteria which is usually transmitted from infected animals urine, particularly rats. It can also be contacted through urine-contaminated environment, such as surface of water, soil and plants.

People who waded through flood water are highly at risk of being infected with Leptospirosis because the bacteria can penetrate through miniature cracks of skin, as well as mouth, nose and the eyes. Eating foods and drinks that are contaminated with Leptospira bacteria also put you at risk of being infected.

According to Ministry of Health Malaysia, 28 death cases of Leptospirosis have been reported as of August 2013, from a total of 2,925 infected cases in the country. Whereas in year 2012, a total of 3,665 leptospirosis cases have been detected, with 48 deaths reported.

A recent news reported that a teenage boy have died of leptospirosis on Dec 25 after contracting the disease at Sungai Kedondong Recreational Centre in Hulu Selangor on Dec 14 and 15. Investigation revealed that the victim and his group of friends had played and swam in the river and waterfall. The place they swam is suspected to be at risk of leptospira infections as the water was stagnant and there are rubbish left behind by other visitors in the area. According to our Field Biologist, rats are forced to seek shelter by infiltrating into houses after being driven out of their nest by heavy rain and flooding. Therefore, it is extremely important to take effective action to protect your home from rat infestations before the downpour of monsoon rains.

Structural weak spots such as holes in brickworks, ceilings and doors are opportunities for rats to access your home. One of the preventive measures is to seal off potential rats entry points and position bait stations at strategic spots to control their invasion.
