What is Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is caused by the Leptospira bacteria. It is an infectious, sometimes fatal disease that affects humans and animals. The bacteria can live for almost a month in fresh water.

 

How Leptospirosis is spread

Prevention

  • Keep your surroundings clean and hygienic.
  • Store and cover food properly to avoid attracting pests, especially rodents.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water before handling food and meals.
  • Wear protective clothing and wash up thoroughly after working in the garden, clearing rubbish and cleaning your home after flood.
  • Avoid recreational water activities in areas where Leptospirosis is common, especially after flood.
  • Wash and wipe your canned/bottle beverage before drinking.

Symptoms

  • Persistent fever and headache
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Muscle and joint aches
  • Abdominal pain
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes)
  • Eye inflammation
  • Cough and skin rash

Treatment

  • This disease can be treated with certain antibiotics. See a doctor immediately for diagnosis and treatment if you experience symptoms of Leptospirosis.
  • Early treatment with antibiotics can help prevent complications and death.
