Commodity fumigation is performed for the eradication of stored product pests in commodities in containers, on stacks or in ship holds to meet the Quarantine requirements of importing countries. Rentokil fumigators are appropriately equipped with many years of knowledge, skill and experience to perform the fumigation over a wide variety of commodities, spices, cut flowers and aquatic plants etc.
A Full Container Load ( or FCL) is the most commonly experienced mode of export packing seen by fumigators. The exported goods, which are stuffed within the shipping Container, is fumigated, and the gas held for a minimum period, then ventilated, before the doors are finally sealed and the Container is allowed to be dispatched. A Fumigation Certificate is subsequently issued for the treated contents and the Container.
Depending on the destination of the cargo, or whether it contains WPM, the relevant fumigation standards are followed by the fumigator during the treatment.
An LCL cargo is easily recognized. It is too small to occupy an entire container. Therefore, it travels with a mixed cargo of other LCL items belonging to other owners, inside the same container. For fumigation purposes, the cargo is kept separate from others.
The fumigation is conducted on-site, usually at the Forwarding Agent’s premises, with the items being treated with fumigant under a gas proof sheeting, and held under gas until the minimum period is over, and the fumigant has been safely ventilated. A Fumigation Certificate is subsequently issued for the treated LCL cargo. The cargo is then loaded into the container.
Depending on the destination of the cargo, or whether it contains WPM, the relevant fumigation standards are applied by the fumigator in his treatment.
Pest infestation is not uncommon onboard vessels and ships, it is essential to take charge of the situation to eliminate the pests especially rats, as part of legal requirements. Rats, in particular, are worrying because of the drastic implications of their existence if left to multiply. In the mid 1300s, almost half of Europe’s population was wiped out with the outbreak a plague in a period called the Black Death. Pneumonic plague is the most virulent form of plague, causes by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Typically, pneumonic form is due to a secondary spread from the advanced infection of an initial bubonic form which is observed in the rat population. Fleas act as a vector for this bacterium and would infect the rat population when having a blood meal.
In vessel fumigation, it is necessary to vacate the all fumigation and risk areas, and ensure that effort has been made to seal all cracks and crevices to prevent the fumigant from escaping once the fumigation has been carried out. Re-entry into the fumigation area is only allowed when it has been declared safe and free of danger by the fumigation staff after the stipulated ventilation period.
